SUPER SNOUT’S JOINT POWER Green Lipped Mussel Powder provides a rich source of all major classes of Glycosaminoglycans (GAGS).
These GAGS are principle components of cartilage and the synovial fluid found in the joint. Most notably, Glycosaminoglycan (a polysaccharide) assists in the repair of joint tissues. These GAGS provide flexibility, elasticity and tensile strength to the articular cartilage. The severity of arthritis is directly related to the loss of GAGS content with the joint and surrounding cartilage. GAGS can also exert a strong anti-inflammatory action on the connective tissue.

Active Components
Super Snout’s Joint Power Green Lipped Mussel Powder has Glycosaminoglycans (also known as Mucopolysaccharides or GAG) containing heparin sulphate, dermatan sulphate, hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulphate. These active ingredients are responsible for the anti-inflammatory and lubricating properties and result in ongoing self-repair and replenishment of joints. It also supplies minerals that are needed to metabolise vitamins, enzymes, carbohydrates, and proteins. The total GAG content of Super Snout’s Green Lipped Mussel Powder is generally in the range of 2 – 3%. Of this, nearly all is heparin sulphate (about 98%) and only 2% is chondroitin sulphate.

Lipids

What is Green Lipped Mussel Powder?
Green Lipped Mussel Extract contains a rich, complex blend of natural proteins, minerals and mucopolysaccharides. The following naturally occurring bioactive substances found in Green Lipped Mussel Extract are increasingly being recognized in supporting joint mobility, cartilage maintenance, cardiovascular health, maintaining healthy skin and for general health:

• complex proteins
• polypeptides
• vitamins
• minerals
• omega fatty acids
• enzymes (ie betaine)
• glycosaminoglycans
• chondroitin sulphates
• glycoproteins and polysaccharides

What is the evidence that it works?

There have been countless studies on both humans and pets. (we have dedicated a page to the scientific clinical trials)… but the most important test of all? We have had AMAZING results using it on ourselves and our own dogs!
A study published in the New Zealand Medical Journal demonstrates that Green Lipped Mussel Powder has similar effects on inhibiting prostaglandin biosynthesis when orally fed to laboratory animals as do non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. (Note that prostaglandins are biochemicals made in the body at elevated levels during inflammation and that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are thought to act principally because they inhibit the production of these prostaglandins when inflammation is initiated.)

Where did it all start?
Here’s the STORY
It all started hundreds of years ago…The coastal dwelling Maori tribe of New Zealand have consumed a diet of Green Lipped Mussels for centuries. The Maori utilized the native mussel as a high nutrient food source, never knowing the true benefit of this perfectly packaged nutritive powerhouse. It wasn’t until later that New Zealand settlers found that the Maori’s never suffered from arthritis or inflammation issues.

The first researchers to take interest? NASA
In 1973 NASA scientists began a worldwide exploration in search of any and all natural ingredients to battle cancer. The NASA researchers never found the anti-caner benefits that they were seeking when they found the New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel, but what they DID find was quite fascinating:
Raw Green Lipped Mussel proved to have impressive anti-inflammatory properties…stronger than any other shellfish or mussel. The scientists studied Green Lipped Mussels over the next 40 years and found that the nutrients in this particular mussel was responsible for the anti-inflammatory effect and confirmed the joint health benefits of Green Lipped Mussel.

Where do the "Green Lips" come from?
Not your mama’s lipstick drawer!
The Mussels are farmed in the pristine waters of New Zealand. The farmers grow the mussels ropes in shallow coastal waters, mimicking the mussels’ natural environment. New Zealand mussel farms use no feeds, fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides at any point. The Green Lipped Mussels are a bio-available natural product making them very environmentally friendly with HIGH sustainability.

Does it matter how they are processed?
YES! If Green Lipped Mussels are to be used therapeutically, they need to be processed in a very particular way… Cold Extraction and Stabilization. Heat immediately destroys vital nutrients in Green Lipped Mussels. Many pet food companies have jumped on the bandwagon, adding GLMP to their foods… unfortunately, this cooked or heated process robs the amazing natural nutrients from the mussels rendering them useless as the consistency changes and crucial lipids, fatty acids, amino acids and GAG’s quickly break down. Always make sure your Green Lipped Mussels are cold extracted and that the lipids are stabilized against rancidity. Make sure they never go through any heating process when used as an ingredient for joint related products for pets.

How do we process our Green Lipped Mussels?
The right way.
The new processing technology developed by our state of the art manufacturing facility in New Zealand allows the use of only pure fresh mussel meat to be cold extracted from the whole mussel (without the shell). A revolutionary freeze drying technology is then used to stabilize the lipids against rancidity. No heat is ever used during any process of the mussel powder production thereby eliminating any damage to the vitamins and amino acids in the mussels.
